FORTIFIED roof replacement
The IBHS FORTIFIED Roof standard was written by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety to keep roofs on houses in hurricanes and severe thunderstorms — the baseline weather on the Alabama Gulf Coast. It's an engineering standard, not a marketing label.
- Sealed roof deck. Taped seams keep water out even if shingles are lost.
- Ring-shank nails. Twice the withdrawal resistance of smooth nails, on a tighter pattern.
- Proper flashing and edge details. Drip edge, starter strips and metal that stay put at 130 mph.
- Your choice of roof covering. Atlas shingles (including Pinnacle Pristine with Scotchgard™ algae protection), or metal and DECRA stone-coated steel.
- IBHS certificate for the mitigation discount on your wind premium.
Strengthen Alabama Homes (SAH) grant roofs
Up to $10,000 toward a FORTIFIED roof, funded by the Alabama Department of Insurance. No income limit — you need an owner-occupied single-family home and a homeowners policy with wind coverage. Bowab is on the SAH approved contractor list for Mobile and Baldwin County.
The process is homeowner-driven and has real gotchas: a 7-day document window, an independent evaluator, three bids, and a grant letter you must have before anyone starts work. We walk you through every step, and partner with local nonprofits for homeowners who need extra help.
